Founded in 1890, the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development is dedicated to educating students for social change both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The School offers programs on campus and online in fields such as applied psychology, education, health, media, music, and art. All programs are led by expert faculty who encourage students to pursue knowledge and skills both inside and outside the classroom.

The Counseling@NYU online program from NYU Steinhardt confers a master of arts in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness degree. The Counseling@NYU program is accredited by the Masters in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC) under the Masters in Counseling Accreditation Committee (MCAC) standards.

Benefits:

  • The social justice-focused curriculum prepares students to work with clients from all backgrounds and serve as advocates for individuals and families in their community.
  • Students learn directly from distinguished NYU Steinhardt faculty members who are leaders and experts in counseling and psychology.
  • Online classes and course work enable students to earn their degree from the prestigious NYU Steinhardt School without attending classes in New York City.

NYU Steinhardt offers various financial aid options to help students fund their graduate education. Counseling@NYU students may apply for federal financial aid including Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans and Graduate PLUS Loans. NYU encourages applicants who are interested in financial aid to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at the same time they complete their Counseling@NYU application.

Admissions Requirements

The admissions requirements for NYU’s online mental health counseling program are the same as those of the on-campus mental health counseling program. To apply, students must complete an online application and provide a resume, statement of purpose, two letters of recommendation, and unofficial transcripts from all post-secondary schools or programs attended.

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree, but GRE scores are not required for admission to the program. Counseling@NYU offers multiple start dates per year, and the admissions committee accepts and reviews applications on a rolling basis.

Online Learning

Counseling@NYU is delivered online so students across the United States can earn a master of arts in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness without attending classes at NYU’s New York City campus. NYU Steinhardt faculty have translated the on-campus curriculum into an effective online format that comprises weekly online classes and interactive course work completed outside of class time.

Students take live online classes that put them face to face with their classmates and NYU Steinhardt faculty. Each class has an average of 15 students so students can get to know each other and their professors. Classes take place in a virtual classroom, which is part of a larger virtual campus where students can communicate and meet with their peers and professors online.

In-person experience is critical for counselors-in-training, and the online program gives students the opportunity to work with real clients at sites near their community. Students work with a field placement team to identify NYU-approved mental health sites where they can gain key clinical skills. In addition to working with a field placement specialist, Counseling@NYU students have access to dedicated technology assistance and academic advising throughout their time in the program.

Field Training

In addition to attending classes and completing course work online, Counseling@NYU students must complete a counseling lab, practicum, and internship training at NYU-approved sites near their community. The counseling lab enables students to practice counseling microskills virtually with a classmate while receiving faculty feedback. The lab is essential to NYU’s training model for counselors and is designed to give students the confidence they need to start working with real clients.

After completing the counseling lab, students complete a 100-hour practicum at a mental health site located in proximity to their preferred address. The final component of field training is a 600-hour internship, which students complete at another local NYU-approved site. Under the supervision of a licensed mental health counselor, students refine and practice their clinical skills while applying the theories they have learned in the virtual classroom.
